History

H_kevins_e_facade.jpg The name for County Wicklow (Holiday Apartments, Wicklow, Ireland) came from the Old Norse, Vykinglo, when it was settled by the Viking colonists. While most of the low country in Wicklow was vulnerable and fell to the foreign invaders, the high country served as a good safe haven for the indigenous Celts to survive.

It was Wicklows Dermot McMurrough, Gaelic King of Leinster that emplored the Normans for assistance in driving the Vikings from his territory. This was the event that propogated the eventual Norman takeover of Ireland.

Co. Wicklow

Wicklow (Holiday Cottages, Wicklow, Ireland) is essentially a mountain area, containing a larger proportion of elevated land than any other county in Ireland, 26 per cent. of the area being above 1000 ft. With the foothills which flank them, they fill practically the whole county, and on their eastern side in particular, they include very beautiful scenery-deep mountain gorges such as Glenmalur, softer valley land- scapes as in the Vale of Ovoca, lovely lakes like Lough Dan, great precipices as on Lugnaquilla. On the inland slope the Liffey and the Slaney rise, the former flowing northward and eastward across Co. Dublin, the latter southward across Co. Wexford. Half the coast-line is occupied by the great gravel beach called the Mill-rough of Wicklow.

H_arklow_bay.jpg The lowland parts of the county are highly tilled and well populated, but towns of any size are. few. Wicklow, the assize town has a small harbour, as has also Arklow further south, and Bray further north. Bray is a favourite seaside, resort, and its large population is in considerable measure, due to its proximity to Dublin. The largest inland town is Baltinglass on the western side of the county.
